Furanyl Fentanyl (Fu-F) is an opioid analgesic that is an analog of fentanyl and has been sold as a designer drug. It has an ED50 value of 0.02 mg/kg in mice. This makes it approximately five times less potent than fentanyl. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) proposed a temporary placement of furanyl fentanyl into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act on 27 September 2016. On November 29, 2016, the DEA issued its final rule, making furanyl fentanyl Schedule I.
“To touch this opioid could absolutely be fatal, just through the skin”, GBI Crime Lab chemist Dineen Kilcrease said. GBI staff suffered a scare in January when it was called to a pill factory where it found 10 kilos of pills and powder that were labeled mistakenly as oxycodone, another opioid. The pills turned out to be the deadly furanyl fentanyl according the Daily Mail.
At least 128 confirmed fatalities have been linked with furanyl fentanyl, according to the DEA, including 49 in North Carolina, 41 in Maryland, 36 in Illinois, and 1 in New Jersey and in Ohio. This number includes overdoses deaths in 2015 and 2016.
According to USA TODAY, furanyl fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opiate similar to heroin, it was found in 10 recent drug-related deaths in Milwaukee County. The county data showed 95 deaths involving fentanyl in 2016, more than tripling the number of cases from 2015. Of the 340 confirmed drug-related deaths in 2016, about 42% — 145 — involved heroin. Lab results are still pending for several drug-related deaths from last year.
